The Brecon Beacons is one of those rare destinations where adventure and calm coexist beautifully—perfect for families with young children. With gentle trails, brilliant playgrounds, and plenty of open space, it’s an easy win for a long weekend away.
Here’s a simple, family-friendly 3‑day itinerary to Brecon Beacons based on our own trip. This itinerary balances adventure with ease—exactly what you need when travelling with young children.

Day 1: Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre
After arriving in the Brecon Beacons from London the evening before, the next morning we headed straight to the National Park Visitor Centre to ease into the day. It’s such a welcoming spot for families — nothing too strenuous, just fresh air and space for the kids to explore. The adventure playground was an instant hit. Our kids ran straight for it, and it had plenty to keep them entertained. It’s safe, spacious, and a great way to burn off that “we’ve been in the car too long” energy.

We grabbed lunch from the café and sat outside overlooking the hills. The views are stunning — the kind that make you instantly slow down and feel like you’re on holiday. After lunch, we wandered along one of the gentle walking trails around the centre. They’re short, easy, and perfect for little legs. The kids loved spotting sheep, collecting sticks, and just being outdoors. The easy terrain was a perfect low‑effort way to introduce little ones to the landscape.

Later, we headed back to our cottage (booked via Airbnb), which quickly became one of our favourite parts of the trip. With its cosy interiors and sweeping hill views, it was the perfect place to relax. We ordered in, curled up, and let the kids wind down after a full day of fresh air.

Day 2: Waterfall Adventures at Blaen y Glyn
Nestled in the Talybont forest, the Blaen-y-Glyn Waterfalls offer a perfect outdoor escape for families with young children. With its gentle trails, enchanting woodland, and cascading waterfalls, this hike is an ideal introduction to nature for little explorers. It offers two walking trails and we took the easy Lower Walk – a 0.8-mile (1.2 km) route, recommended for a shorter, scenic waterfall walk ideal for viewing several small waterfalls and pools.

We started from the lower car park, and this walk was pure magic for the kids. The trail is short and varied, with streams to splash in, little bridges to cross, and waterfalls appearing around corners. It felt adventurous but never too challenging. Both children loved it — they could easily manage most of the path with a bit of hand‑holding near the waterfall itself.

After the excitement of the waterfalls, we enjoyed a scenic drive and soaked up the views that seem to appear everywhere in the Brecon Beacons. Once again, we returned to our cottage for a relaxed evening. We ordered dinner, watched the smoke rising from chimneys against the backdrop of the hills, and enjoyed the kind of quiet you only get in the countryside.
Day 3: Play + Nature at Parc Bryn Bach
After a relaxed late morning and checking out, we spent our final day at Parc Bryn Bach, which turned out to be another brilliant spot for families. Sadly, I have no pictures from this day.
The playground is fantastic — modern, spacious, and great for both younger and older kids. After the playground, we took the easy loop around the lake. It’s flat, stroller‑friendly, and full of wildlife. The kids loved spotting ducks and swans, and the walk itself was peaceful and refreshing. We grabbed a simple lunch from the café and treated the kids to ice cream by the water.
Before leaving for London, we let the kids have one last run around the playground. It felt like the perfect way to wrap up a trip that was all about fresh air, freedom, and family time.
Our three days in the Brecon Beacons were exactly what we needed — gentle adventures, beautiful scenery, and plenty of space for the kids to explore safely.
